In this video, I explain and demonstrate a pad drill I created based on the opening sequence of Fukyugata Ni, the second basic form in Matsubayashi Ryu. My students seem to like it a lot. Enjoy!
Yes, I teach the kata first, then pad drills and bunkai drills. However, I am still experimenting with teaching portions of the kata, then the corresponding drills. Also, I've been playing around with teaching application first, then the sections of the kata (which, in my understanding, is how things were done originally, as far as we can tell--teach partner training first, then teach the form/kata for solo training). I'm getting mixed results there.
So do mine!
Although I had to spend 20 mins teaching them the kata I know as gekisai dai ichi to give them some context.
Thanks David!
