Setting datums and clearing obstructions

I thought the good people of this forum would find this video interesting.

As well as being just a great breakdown of a fantastic boxer I find "Trick #4" at approximately 5:10 quite pertinent to how Iain approachs bunkai. I think it has parallels with the way the hands work in kata, setting datums, clearing obstructions and generally being "busy" rather than a passive chin high "guard". There are quite a few videos out there on how boxers and MMA fighters (even when hamstrung by having gloves on) use trapping and controlling hand fighting to open up lines of attack and restrict defensive options.

Oh and have the sound on as the tune used on that video is fantastic. :)

Good video that. Thanks for sharing. While the context is different, the methodology is similar on “trick 4” i.e. we see “husband and wife hands” were the non-striking hand is not passive but is trying to clear a path.

Consensual fighting involves moving back and forth with gaps opening and closing all the time (hands often too far away to engage). Self-protection tends to start close and stay that way (you are almost always close enough to have the hands busy). Therefore, what is a minor skill in fighting; is much more prevalent in self-protection (and kata). You do see it in both though. An example that leaps to mind is this one:

That’s essentially the “U-Punch” we find in Passai / Bassai-Dai. What we would not see in self-protection is the initial feeling each other out and moving back and forth; but once it gets close “husband and wife hands” kicks in.

All the best,

Iain

And another video showing the same hook and pull down to clear a line that Lomachenko uses.

Interestingly, palming the enemy’s arm down, before striking to the head / eyes with the same hand is one of the methods in the Bubishi. The name for the technique is, “like a bird flapping its wings”; undoubtedly this is because of the wing-like motion of the arm when applying the technique … However, I think, “cat slaps the dog” also as a certain ring to it :-)

Thanks for sharing!
