What's this kick?

Hi all. I've seen a kind of kick thing in various videos, some based on kung fu but more capoeira. I'd love to learn it, just for larking on, but without knowing what it's called I can't really research it, so all I have to go on is brief sub 1 second bursts of full speed technique. I'm hoping if I can describe it well enough, someone might know it, and be able to point me in the right direction. The kick simultaneously uses both legs. The person executing the technique is either on the ground, for example having been knocked down, or close to, have sort of ran and slid in. The kicker is on their side. The foot closest to the ground kicks forward to sweep the opponent's feet, while the other leg goes for a high reverse roundhouse / hook kick. The goal appears to be to sort of completely flip the opponent. Any ideas? EDIT: The technique I'm on about happens in this video, 30 seconds in. And as an aside, if you watch the video passed the mock fight to the out takes, the girl has the most contagious laugh.

It's a takedown, not a kick, although I do see how you could look at it that way. That technique is called kani-basami, or flying scissor takedown. It's banned in Judo for destroying knees--notably destroying one right in front of a TV camera in the 80's. It does show up in a lot of different fighting arts, though, and shows up in the Bubishi.

Thanks for the quick and informative response. That gives me a lot to go on for researching it. We don't have anything like it in the style I practice. Well closest would be what is informally known as the dragon tail sweep, but that's not really the same as it only uses one leg. Thanks for the heads up about it being a destroyer of knees. I'll bear that in mind and take extra care when I practice it with willing training partners.

Hi Anf,

Here's a vid of the legendary Tatsuo Suzuki Sensei (Wado ryu) executing the same technique in a older karate vid. Skip to 25.35 mins to catch it.

All the best,

Rei

Hi Iain. Thanks for sharing that excellent video. Sorry I seemed to miss it earlier.

Aged 18 it was my favourite throw. I used to jump/spin into it from a hook punch attack. Yes, dangerous to pull in competition. Not only banned in Judo but BJJ too. But as a technique to play with in class it's a great one.
