Unsu Jump Bunkai from Ken Baker

The jump in Unsu is an intriguing motion for us bunkai enthusiasts. In this video Ken Baker shares some of his thinking around the motion. Ken is one of the most knowledgeable martial artists I have ever met. I’m lucky enough to have had lots of opportunity to talk martial arts with him on my visits to the USA. His extensive knowledge across numerous systems means he can see things that are not always obvious to others, and I think these bunkai examples are good illustrations of that. This video is privately listed on YouTube and are posted here with Ken’s permission.

All the best,

Iain

Some interesting ideas from Ken! I never thought about the "turning wrist takedown" as applications for the jump, but I see the connection.

Maybe worth me sharing my ideas on a similar sequence in Kanku Sho - https://www.leighsimms.com/single-post/2018/03/26/Jumping-Turning-Kick-Bunkai. To adapt it to Unsu, I would just change the initial foot catch to be facing the enemy and pressing forward.

Very nice Leigh!

Here is a basic one that I originally picked up from a Savate text.

Eagle-eyed views may see Leigh make a cameo appearance in this one :-)

All the best,

Iain

I like the Mawashi-Uke variation from Sanchin kata which can be useful If your assailant doesn't go down to the ground. Excellent video.....Regards...Gerald
