Opening Sequence of Fukyugata Ni (Gekisai Ichi)

The second basic kata in Matusbayashi-ryu is called Fukyugata Ni. Originally, this is a Goju-ryu kata created by Chojun Miyagi called Gekisai Ichi (for those who may not be familiar with these kata). In this video, we review a basic bunkai application (influenced by Iain's approach to this kata) and then discuss in detail a takedown application for the opening sequence, which applies the low-block windup movement as a set up position for a takedown. The dynamic slide backward into low-block position is applied as the takedown technique.

David

Hi David, thanks for the video. Again, well done! It is a kata I don't practice but I see a similarity to a sequence in Shotokan's Nijushiho. See from 2:26 in this video:

Instead of the preparatory open hand of the age-uke and the actual age-uke we see a haishu-uke and a step forward into age-empi.

But the application can be very similar to what you've shown in your video.

Take care,

Marc

Thank you Marc! I studied Shotokan many years ago, but we did not do Nijushiho. LOL. Yes, there can be similar applications for sure!

Best,

David

Awesome video David on Geksai Dai. Very straight forward, plus the intro to the kata as you went 45 degree with the gedan barai strike to the forearm is vital to strike at the nerve mid section of your opponent's arm. Regards...Gerald.

Gerald,

Thanks so much! And thanks for the nerve-bundle tip. I don't discuss that too much with beginners (my only student base at the moment), but I do mention in general how hitting certain targets and parts of the body tend to cause certain responses and repositionings/disruptions of body posture and how kata take advantage of these elements to set up followup strikes.

Best,

David
