Renraku waza (Wado)

Hi all,

Not practical related, but trying to get my head around some wado ryu renraku waza techniques I am working on. Could someone explain to me the difference between:

1. Surikomi jodan vs. tobikomizuki jodan

2. Renzuki chudan vs. gyakuzuki chudan

Watching videos on the techniques I can't tell the difference. I will have a chat with my sensei about it tomorrow, but thought I get some wider consultation.

Many thanks,

Nieky

Hi Nieky,

The techniques are the same, but the name reflects the way they are being combined.

In Wado’s set combinations, “Surikomi jodan” refers to a tobikomizuki done with a sliding foot movement. The Surikomi (摺り込み) refers to the foot movement i.e. “sliding”.

“Renzuki” refers to a “consecutive punch”. So, it’s still a gyakuzuki, but one flowing on from another punch.

The names used in the combinations refer to the way they are being done and combined, as opposed to what the techniques would be labelled when removed from the combination.

You can do “front hand punch” and “reverse punch” in loads of differing ways. The labelling makes it clear the front punch is to be done while sliding forward, and the following reverse punch should flow on from it (i.e. they overlap such that the backhand goes out as the lead hand comes back).

I hope that helps.

All the best,

Iain
