Does anyone know of some recommended preactical karate / bunkai based groups in the New York area (ideally with a Shotokan base)? I’ve been asked to help someone who has just move to the area and all the groups I know of are probably too far away for regular training.

I don't know if it helps but we are in Bayport Long Island. About 50 miles east of Manhattan. We are an Okinawan base, but one of our students had Shotokan forms in his mix. We are really kind of our own way and don't consider ourselves to be Okinawan / Japanese Karate if that helps.

There are a couple of Koryu Uchinadi groups in new york. One in Brooklyn and one on long island. Not sure of the exact details but if they emailed https://www.koryu-uchinadi.com they would be able to get them. Should be bunkai based but probably a lot of lesser known kata not shotokan.
