Some quotes I’ve recently shared via the facebook page (www.facebook.com/iainabernethy):

"Love those who persecute you because they are the instruments to your destiny" - Joseph Campbell

“You can’t talk your way out of what you’ve behaved yourself into.” - Stephen R. Covey

“While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions.” - Stephen R. Covey

"I don't want to live like I'm just another slave; I don't wanna live that way; I've got a purpose & a plan; I don't wanna live like a dead man. Dead man slipping through his twilight years; Coming to realise that he never faced his fears; But there aint no second chances, just regret & bitter tears; Then it's over." - Dead Man by The Have Nots

"What is happiness? The feeling that power is growing; that resistance is overcome." - Freidrich Neitzsche

"If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading" (on a fish shaped bookmark I was given).

"When heaven is about to infer an important office on a man, it first embitters his heart in its purpose; it causes him to exert his bones and sinews; it makes his body suffer hunger; it inflicts upon him want and poverty and confounds his undertakings. In this way it stimulates his will, steels his nature and thus makes him capable of accomplishing that which he would otherwise be incapable of accomplishing." – Mencius (quoted by Gichin Funakoshi in Karate-Do Kyohan).

‎"Tough people win fights, smart people avoid them" ~ Me

Some things just come with age. I used to feel I'd let myself down if I walked away from a confrontation. Now I feel I've let myself down if I get drawn into one. Not sure when the switchover happened - probably when I grew up!

I don´t know who said it, but I think it describes very well the sense of our traditions:

"tradition is the handing on of fire not the worship of ashes"

For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.  Sun Tzu

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.  Sun Tzu

Invincibility lies in the defence; the possibility of victory in the attack.  Sun Tzu

He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, will be victorious.  Sun Tzu

Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?  Sun Tzu

  • We have to trust the training we receive and try and get better at what we are taught, to the best of our ability.
  •  Listen the best you can, train the best you can, and just feel for the training at this present moment.

A quote I read many years ago I saw attributed to Bruce Lee but whether he got it from someone else I don't know. Whatever, I've always liked it:

He who knows not knows not he knows not, he is an idiot - shun him.

He who knows not and knows he knows not, he is ignorant - teach him.

He who knows and knows not he knows, he is asleep - wake him.

He who knows and knows he knows, he is a teacher - follow him.
