Pinan Shodan Opening Movements

Hello, again!

Another one of our Waza Wednesday videos went live, this morning, and I thought I would share it here. My Sensei wanted to try a few different formats with these videos, so it's a bit different from the last one. Instead of doing a detailed breakdown of one application, we go through a variety of applications for the same sequence--in this case, the opening sequence from Pinan Shodan (Heian Nidan). Since we didn't go in-depth, we left out some variations and more advanced bits, like using the legs, softening blows, and some of the limb controls. The video starts off with a "traditional" partner drill that is impractical for fighting applications, but can be used for beginners, or for forearm conditioning. After that, it goes into some more practical applications, albeit with some things not included, as I mentioned. There are certainly more variations, additions, entries, and follow-ups you can use, but hopefully some of these examples get you thinking!

Very good. These days i was thinking about this movement. I think we could add that it can be done as an Age Uke followed by an elbow seize with the other hand, and then perhaps finish with Testui or kote through the face.

Cool channel. And it shows how one kata can be an entire style of it's own.
