Although limb striking tends to be associated more strongly with FMA and Silat, there are several limb striking methods within karate that I wanted to explore a bit in this article. I hope somebody finds it useful!

As well written as always Noah. Keep ‘em coming!
Defiantly part of karate as this photo of Motobu in action confirms.
All the best,
Iain
I knew there was a photo of Motobu showing that technique, but I couldn't find it for the life of me when I was putting together the article! Of course, now that I've seen it again, I found it in my collection :P. Thanks, Iain! There is also a photo of a different limb strike in Morinobu Itoman's book, but I didn't want to bother Mario McKenna Sensei again so soon after using one of those photos in another article recently.
Hi Noah,
I had the book out today so it’s a nice coincidence that you put that article out today too :-)
All the best,
Iain
Nice article, Noah!
No question in my mind that most common hand movements in kata are direct limb attacks or set-ups on the limbs en route to the head and body.
I mean, let's face it--there's nothing secretive about punching someone in the face or stomach. Why would the masters create a kata highlighting techniques that even my grandmother knows about? :)
Thanks!
I was thinking about this the other day while playing about with the first moves in heian nidan. Thanks for the article good read.
Very well done.
A number of the simultaneous hand movements in Goju are actually limb attacks. You just don't see very many people teaching that.
I recieved my Karate Shodan from Nigel Lee, who used to post as "Tandoori" on this forum. The one thing that stands out about him was for a short guy he had a a hellish impressive and accurate side kick targetted to the bicep. Not something I would choose to do but I couldn't deny how effective it was.
