Flinch Response Pad Drill for Pinan Shodan

Working bunkai drills with a partner at varying degrees of compliance is crucial to our self-defense kata application training. However, as Iain so clearly notes, the flaw in partner drills is that you cannot hit your partner at full speed and power. So, we practice by pulling our techniques. But, we need to train at full speed and power as well. So, developing pad drills to accompany partner drills helps address the flaw in the partner drills. This video explains a basic pad drill to work the striking and takedown elements in the flinch response bunkai partner drill. I'm striving to have impact training drills to accompany most, if not all, of the bunkai partner drills. It may not always work out, but I'm trying! LOL.

Best,

Thanks for sharing that with us Dave. I do like bunkai training on modern kit. Aside from being a great way of training, there’s something about the combination of old and modern that appeals.

All the best,

Iain
