Funakoshis Nine Throws (and Nodo-Osae)

Hi All,

Here is a video of my friend Craig showing his take on Funakoshi’s Nine Throws (and Nodo-Osae) as part of the demonstration he was required to do for this 3rd dan grading with the Shindo Karate Association. Craig kindly let me post it here:

Enjoy!

All the best,

Iain

hi,

Sorry for the delay in replying to this post. I just wanted to say thanks to Iain for putting up the video. I am also aware that there was a msitake between one of the throws. I had printed out all the throws with their names etc and pinned them to the mirrors behind Callum. But I got lost when I was reading them and that was the confusion with Callum. He was right!!!  But just dont tell him that.!!

Also our BB Gradings go over 2 days, 6 hrs on the Friday night and all day Sat, this was the afternoon sesion on the Sat so I was a bit tired to say the least.

I do hope people found it interesting and as I said to Iain, please forgive my throwing. Its getting better, but I am a much better puncher! wink

Cheers

Craig

Thanks for sharing. I am planning on teaching a seminar on these throws later in the fall. Do you have any additional insights on any of them that you'd care to share? And my compliments to your uke for taking the falls very well.

Below you can find some of the videos that I’ve put out on Funakoshi’s throws. Hopefully they will be of some help. If others have others, it would be great to have them added to this thread.

All the best,

Iain

Thanks for the compliment to my uke. He will be pleased! Just to say he is my son so it's quite handy having him around to practice things on ☺

Of course, I started with your videos, Iain! The hand stripping in your take on kubiwa is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for.

My plan is to demonstrate each throw, first as Funakoshi shows in Kyohan (or Jutsu for nodo osae) so that I'm not accused of heresy, then from the clinch (mostly collar-elbow ties), then pad drills and flow drills.

If any video is taken, I'll be sure to share it here.

(And we'll discuss places in katad where these might be found)

That would be great!

I just happened to see this in a you tube preview and I noticed the judo-ka's hand placement looks similar to opening sequence  of heian nidan/pinan shodan  I def like Iains bunkai for that but could there also be a throw there?  Hope I'm not over analyzing was just curious

Can you share the video with the hand placement to which you are referring?

If does seem like the link is missing? If you could place the YouTube link, I will embed it from there. Thanks!

All the best,

Iain
