Heian Yondan - First Part

Hi

In the last week we had a couple of great videos shared on the forum with Tau and Iain posting ideas regarding Pinan / Heian Yondan.  I'd mentioned the version of Rick Clark (Pressure Point Fighting and 75 Down Blocks) that I'd used in the first edition of the Heian Flow System, but I didn't have any footage to hand.

I'd originally planned to do a slight spoof of Tau's video where the Turkey stole the show, but although one student volunteered to be a turkey and another volunteered various items of fancy dress, what with one thing and another the various items were left at home.

This video was shot yesterday during part of a 'drop in' class with students popping in for differing amounts of time over four hours of light training that I was doing.  The chap who helps me at the end is actually on his third class.  The video kicks off with me doing a little walk through of my version of Rick Clark's application.  I don't lift my hand all the way up in part because Chris is shorter than me, in part because he's got very flexible wrists and fingers, and the technique isn't so effective on him.  I then talk about my current favourite application of the hand drop (which also works - and in some ways works better - against the two handed version) applied against a control I use a great deal.

I'm disappointed - no turkey!

Great work. Thanks. It's fascination just how many potential applications there are for one sequence!

Thanks.

I think the closest we got to the Turkey was the offer of a pink feather boa, allegedly swapped for another item of clothing with a hen party. blush

John,

Thanks for the bunkai video- it's the first time I have really accepted a proper use for Kokutsu Dachi, granted we don't use it and I didn't look very hard but I have asked many, many Shotokan people about this over many years and never had this kind of explanation- there is hope!

Note- I don't recall Iains work in relation to this dachi, im sure it's great.

The concept of excapes from holds via Kata Bunkai is signifcant IMO and one not often looked at.

Thanks.  It's not a position I use particularly regularly excepting this application and where a hold requires me to move back away from a person to apply pressure.  I should point out that 'my' back stance here is more like modern Shotokan rather than traditional back stances and I'm not deliberately going in to it, rather I'm moving in what seems to me to be the best way to achieve my objective.
