Thanks for sharing! I like how you’ve used the two together there. In line with the conversation we’ve been having on why things are in threes, putting the two together like that would make sense of it here (right to left, and left to right … for which you only need one left so right, left, right). The gedan barai parry high and redirect low is also nice. As a variation, you could step behind the enemy’s leg on the second one to block the path of their step, so they fall as their either stagger back from the strike or try to step back to avoid it. That position would also see you off the line of the free hand. The ability to do that would depend on the position of the enemy’s legs, so it would not always be possible. But it is an option.

All the best,

Iain

Thanks for the video, Lionel.

Here's a similar application of the same sequence. The slight difference is that I step in a little closer to the attacker. Instead of the arm bar I hit the kidney, but it would also work with the arm bar. With the second teisho-uchi I step behind the attacker's leg while attacking his head.

The sequence is at 59 seconds in the video:

Take care,

Marc

Thnaks for your comment. That is Yes an option and a good one. I am not going outside as I am looking to go on his weak line, could be also outside but I would have to rotate wich will make me move more than I should. I am more confortable like this as I enter and strike : Irimi Atemi. But I will try your option and seek to see the one is more fluid and pragmatic.

Thanks for the great job you're doing for karate.

All the best,

Lionel

I think we have a nice set of alternatives developing! Either can work and you can make the case it depends on distance.

Nice video. That’s what I was referring to I the above post.

I think it will depend on where is feet are. If the feet are in a position where we can step behind them, then it can be an effective option … but, as you say, if his feet are wider, we don’t want to compromise the line of the strike. I agree that the power of the strike should always be the primary concern.

What is optimum will depends on the circumstance I feel.

“It depends” is always an accurate answer :-)

All the best,

Iain
