Kushanku / Kanku-Dai / Kosokun-Dai Pad-Drill

In this video we look at a pad drill for the opening sequence of Kushanku / Kanku-Dai / Kosokun-Dai kata. This pad drill is an accompaniment for a two-person flow drill for the first part of the kata. Both drills are designed to give a quick run through the lessons of the early part of the kata. They are not to be considered a replication of actual violence, nor are they the kata bunkai as applied. They can be likened to a singer singing scales in that the actual notes will be used in songs, but the scale is not the song.  Likewise, the elements of the drill will be used in live practise and combat, but the drill itself in neither live practise nor combat. It needs to be understood that this bit of footage comes from two full days of training. So, while the content and nature of such drills was understood by the participants – and they were aware of how the drills fit into the wider training matrix – you as the viewer are not privy to that information. I nevertheless hope you enjoy the video and the content is of interest to you.

All the best,

Iain
