Looking for a new club

Hi all,

does anyone know of a really good karate club in the Sidcup, Kent area. I am not interested in sport karate or grading, love kata and learning through realisic paired work. If only i lived in the Lakes ;-)

any suggestions gratefully received.

What style of Karate are you already Skilled in as that would be a basis to start from?

National Governing Bodies such as EKF, EKA, NAKMAS, BKA, CMAA, AMA, UKMAS and others might be able to assist. Also Look at  The IKO, BKK and other Kyokushin Based Org's

Also look at Facebook and your local Church, Sports/Leisure Centre.

Thanks Black Tiger,

a mixture of Shotokan and Goju. I have done all the usual searches but all the clubs are heavily sport based. The nearest thing I can find are some truly excellent ju jitsu instructors and clubs. I am 53 and have a dodgy back from rugby days so i am unsure wether this old chap could cope with all the throwing! I will give it a try if the karate clubs are not up to scratch though.

Any personal recommendations anyone? Eastbourne has Kissaki (Don Came) but its to far, as is Kernow in Chelmsford :-(

Hi Stuart

As Sevenoaks is not a million miles from Sidcup I would suggest these.

Have you checked out Sensei Roger Sheldons group based in Sevenoaks.

http://www.rogersheldon.com/Shinseido/

Blurb: This is not sport karate.  This is not 'schools' Karate.  Shinseido Shorin Ryu (normally abbreviated to Shinseido for convenience) is a practical no nonsense self-defence system rooted in an old Okinawan family tradition (Matsumura Seito).  It may look similar to other systems in its initial stages but within a handful of years it begins to transcend that elementary and simplistic level to become a totally functional and meaningful system.

Alternatively if you want something more physical try this kyokushinkai based group

Blurb: Karate Jutsu Kai is an established Martial Arts system with international recognition. Founded by the renowned Kancho Bernard Creton (9th dan), the style strives to provide a system of self defence with traditional values. In Kancho Creton we are fortunate to have a lineage, which leads back to the teaching of Mas Oyama himself and today, Kancho's continued passion and leadership inspires all those who follow him. Sevenoaks Karate Jutsu Kai operates from the Kikodo Centre, Bradbourne Vale Road in Sevenoaks.

I recently trained at their Ashford dojo and it was one of the toughest workouts i have had in a long time but very enjoyable.

So how did you go, finding a club?

Hi Black Tiger,

still checking out websites locally to get a flavour of what is out there. I am doing this systematically, Wado is next on my list. The best training to be had seems to be Jujitsu with some excellent people really very close. The downside is that i love the whole kata thing which they don't really do.

i am not in a rush. I have some seminars planned (Done Came is next) and i am also enjoying a bit of a break after about 10 years of continuous training.

will post when I make my mind up!

Regards,

Stu

How many Kata do you already know?

If you know 5-10 kata that's more than enough, keep practicing them. You could even do kickboxing as long as you keep your personal practice of Kata.

Wado is a good style although is it Karate or is it Jujitsu
