Pad Drill for Fukyugata Ich

Hello,

Here is a simple pad drill for the second bunkai set I teach for Fukyugata Ich. Instead of the takedown application, I'm teaching students to disrupt the attacker's posture, expose a vital target, and to strike that target. I'm becoming a real fan of the hammer fist, the more I teach it. Students find it easy to learn and apply, and you can use improvised weapons easily. So, I end this short drill with the hammer fist. Fun stuff!

Hi Dhogsette

Nice combination. Only thing I don't agree with is the hammer fist (not that it would not work) but your uke's angle of the arm, I would be worried abot injury, the angle of his forearm, elbow and shoulder is asking for injury, especially if you hit with force. On the clip you can see his arm is completly relaxed.

Kind regards

Les

Les,

Yes, students were careful and made adjustments, such that it worked out fine. But you are right--if students aren't careful and if instructors don't supervise properly, there is potential for shoulder injury. Yet, the combo flows nicely... We continue to tweak and make refinements. Thanks for the observation. (Note, this particular uke is incredibly strong and flexible, so he was fine. But, we can't assume everyone will be so resilient, and as instructors we must be sensitive to people's strengths, weaknesses, and limits, and we should encourage students to be mindful as well.)

Best,

Hi David

Good to hear. Personally I would use different position of the pad, but if it works for you and your students, thats great.

Kind regards

Les

I love bunkai on the pads! It can throw distancing (“fake head” not there the real head would be) and timing (sometimes minor pauses / slowdowns are needed to give uke time to move pads) out a little, but it’s good to actually hit something! Kata based pad drills can fill a gap in regular bunkai practise (timing and distancing good but no impact). The whole training matrix then sits together nicely with all bases covered.

All the best,

Iain
