We use the exact same drills in our dojo--the parry-pass is a very common method across all karate styles, and even beyond that, as far as I'm aware, so that's not terribly surprising. I actually wrote an article on it (http://www.karateobsession.com/2017/01/the-parry-pass-method-karates-universal-defense.html) and we have looked at similar drills in a previous Waza Wednesday.
