Seeking a club/study group in Northampton, UK with a more Iain Abernethy-esque approach.

I've been training for 16 years now (on and off) and am seeking a club or study group that follows similar methods to Iain Abernethy in/around the NN3 area of Northampton. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for posting the request. I’ll share the link via social medial to people in the vicinity and we can see what comes up.

All the best,

Iain

I am also in Northampton, and have also been looking around for a practical karate club in the Northampton and surrounding areas as well.  I know of several other karate-ka that are in the same boat as ourselves.

I think at some point we will have to bite the bullet and see what it takes to start up our own practical karate club and talk to Mr Abernethy about the best way to do this.  I've had a brief conversation with Lee Mullan a wee while ago at one of Iain's seminars and he was very much of the mind of "just go do it".

Also, shameless plug for an upcoming seminar in Northampton;

Hi Guys. We train Friday evenings in Roade (J15 M1) Northampton and May be what you’re looking for. Details of our next U.K. course :

So, for now, it looks like forming a study group is the most viable option?

I don't yet know where I stand with my current club on the matter though; I've been off ill for a month now and don't know when I'll be able to find out. I assume you already know with yours?

I have to admit that, for someone like myself, who isn't a natural born leader, with limited experience in taking the class, I find the prospect of starting up a new club a daunting one but also intrigueing. We all have to step outside our comfort zones at some point.

And that "shameless plug" has made my day! Thank you very much.

Sorry, link won’t add - I’m probably too stupid to get it to work. Check out our Facebook page - Kenshindoryu Nippon Budo Kyokai for course details Ohyo Kata for Kushanku.

Many thanks kenshindoryu. What time do you train? I'd like to come along and observe a session if that's okay?

We have a sword session (Toyamaryu) from 6:30 to 7:30 followed by Wado until 9pm. Welcome to come along and watch or have a go. First session is free anyway.

Leigh Tokelove and Dave Harris can't be far from you. Iain? They are planning to set up their own dojo, they're well versed in Iain's methods and they're good guys.

Hi Peter,

Maybe not start a new club at the moment, but I think a meeting of like-minded individuals would be a good start.  I know a number of karate-ka of differing styles who are interested.

That said, I will probably be visiting kenshindoryu in the not too distant future to see what they're up to ^_^

Good call! Leigh and David are good guys who have trained with me a lot. I also oversaw their BCKA dan gradings. They would be a great option! I’ll reach out and see if they are currently able to lead a training group.

All the best,

Iain

I would definitely be up for that, especially if we can get this Dave and Leigh duo on board. Though, as I mentioned before, I haven't been in the best of health lately, so no rush on that (at least I'll be better in time for the seminar!).

You'd be MORE than welcome.  Just drop me a line on the email in the flyer and I'll be more than happy to reserve you a place :)

David & Leigh are great guys. As has been mentioned they're in the process of starting their own club. David asked for a copy of my syllabus, which I'm happy to help them with. I'll be giving them a copy when I see them in a couple of weeks when they attend my seminar on Naihanchi.

Hi All, Myself and Leigh are based in Nottingham and we currently are working towards setting up a club in Nottinghamshire, we've both trained with Iain over a number of years and had Iain grade us to 1st dan We have also trained in other martial arts such as Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Jujitsu, kobudo. If you think its worthwhile then we may be able to help with working on more pragmatic karate, please let us know.

That sounds fantastic, except for how far away it is. If I could make it, it'd probably only be a monthly thing.

Hi David,

Many thanks for the update.  Could you send me the details when you have the venue and training timetable sorted?

Hey troozers, how are things looking with your contacts?

That's okay, it's not the end of the world. How about you, where are you based?

Worcestershire. I too am well versed in Iain's methods and indeed am proud to be an instructor under him. I'll gladly come over and provide a seminar. You're so well located as there are several great instructors from different directions that you could call on.

I'm humbled by your generosity.

Could you give some examples of these other instructors? Do you mean other seminars? And where would you have in mind for yours? If I could get a study group together beforehand, all the better.

You may have gathered that my sense of geography isn't fantastic. I'm thinking Derby - Craig Johnson

East of England - Deeping Shotokan

Down towards the M25 - Doug Connell, Brian Bates, Barry Payne

I think south west of you is Charles Lampshire

...

Iain help me out

If you could get a venue sorted then I could come to you. Or you're welcome to come to me in Worcestershire.Or somewhere in between if anyone would like to host a multi-instructor seminar. We have contacts in Solihull, Coventry, Bedford, Cambridge and Huntingdon (I admit not all of those contacts are Karate people)

Lings Forum Leisure Centre comes to mind (quite close to where I live actually) but one thing at a time, as I said, I'd like to get a study group together first.

Fair plan. Or how about a small introductory session for local folk or those willing to travel who are interested. Start with basics and some drills to take away and play with.

Thanks.

Once I get the local folk together (which is slow going at the moment), I may just take you up on that. For future reference - should we decide to go to you - where would it be?

Marley (Leisure Centre) or Shrawley (Village Hall.) Both outside Worcester. I host once or twice yearly seminar which other members of this forum have attended.

Oh yes, forgot to ask: Do you have any specific dates for those yet?

No. It’s up to you. I don’t have anything scheduled but we can work out a day if you like. I have a class every Sunday morning so I could hire the hall for an afternoon if you wanted.

I still need to sort things out locally first so it won't be immediately. I'll be sure to PM you when the times comes though. Thank you.
