Should I buy the pinan yon /go drills or the naihanchi drills download/dvd?

Hey folks, I have bought the bunkai and drills downloads for the first set of pinan katas. I am a bit tight on money but would like to buy the Naihanchi kata (in fact I want to buy everything ha), as it appears an awesome fighting system to learn and as Mabuni I think said the only kata he taught. Or is it more worth my time getting the final pinan katas? Anyone who has both got any thoughts? Cheers Rhid.

Having started down the “Pinan path” I would finish that off. All five kata sit together as a holistic system. As regards the DVDs / downloads, my advice to people is they should always start with the follow three, and watch them in order:

1) The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vol. 1

2) The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vol. 2

3) Beyond Bunkai: A Holistic Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan Close-Range Flow Drill

The reason being is the first title looks at set drills, the second one includes variations drills at the end, and Beyond Bunkai is all about unscripted training. So, with those three titles people get bunkai and drills for all five Pinans and Naihanchi, and, more importantly, they also get a good overview of the differing training methods and the progression that applies to all kata. Those three together give the best “bang for your buck”. I hope that helps.

All the best,

Iain
