Training children

Hello everyone,

I have just started teaching a group of children of ages 7-12.  Does anyone know of any good resources or have any advice regarding how to structure a lesson in order to keep kids entertained, games, appropriate exercises, things to avoid, etc?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd definately get CRB checked if your in the UK, and have a read of these books. The 2nd one is by our very own Sensei Lawrence. Kids are happy if they're having fun. try and create games out of the techniques and for exercises try and add a littel bit of comeptition. Also when it comes to grading them, ONLY put them through a grading if you KNOW they'll pass. Nothing worse than teaching a child what it is to be a failure!

Thank you for all of this Black Tiger.

I'll be teaching in Belgium and have already had the equivalent of the CRB check.  The worrying thing is that they do  not appear to do an international check, despite the fact that I specified that I would be  teaching children.

I ordered the first book earlier on this week, but will also check out the other two.  The trick for me is creating lessons that are both serious and fun, so games will be a key ingredient.

I had the very first lesson this week and the thing that the kids loved the most was when I told them that they were going to get an opportunity to shout.  Their kiais almost brought the roof down, although one sounded strangely like a squealing hamster.

Thanks again.

Hi folks,

I have done some karate teaching mainly assisting a much more senior instructor.  However I do work in schools PE which I feel helps with karate teaching.  I would recommend definitely getting  a CRB sorted and some kind of First Aid qual.

From what I see in schools if the young people appear to be getting bored with an activity try to change it up or change the activity at regular intervals.  Also, definitely agree with an earlier post about games – I’ve seen my instructor make that work very well, especially after he noticed a drop in ‘morale/motivation’
