This eleven minute video was filmed at a weekend seminar in Stuttgart, Germany in June 2013. It looks at some basic arm-locks – all of which can be found in the karate kata – and how one can flow to the next should the technique be effectively resisted. The locks are applied with a view to facilitating the delivery of strikes (always the primary method) or putting the enemy on the ...more

Here is a video of me skipping before a class to warm up … and to try to show off  to my daughter! :-) My daughter filmed our “skip off” … and she is way better than me, but her modesty was such that she would not allow me to post footage of her soundly thrashing her dad! Skipping is a great warm up! It raises body temperature and can really work the shoulders ( ...more

This clip was taken in June 2013 at a seminar I did in Alabama, USA. The seminar covered a wide range of kata applications and principles. One drill we quickly looked at was the “shifting sequence” from Wanshu kata (called “Enpi” in Shotokan). We had already established that the angle shown in the kata does not show the angle you are being attacked from, but the angle ...more

This video was filmed at a seminar in Norway at which we were analysing the applications of Passai / Bassai-Dai. This short clip looks at a basic application for the “u-punch” or “yama-zumi” (mountain punch). The technique is applied from a position of disadvantage where the enemy has secured a grip on your wrist and has opened up a pathway for a head strike. Whist not a ...more

This video shows a single drill that covers the applications for the whole of Pinan / Heian Godan. On my Facebook page I mention that my students had been working on the drill in practise and I asked if people wanted to see it. 434 people said they did and that is why this footage was filmed. This short clip cannot possibly explain the methods and reasoning for every single technique within ...more

This bit of raw dojo footage shows a bunkai drill for the first half of Pinan / Heian Yodan. The drill is not a “technique” to be used as is, but a drill that quickly allows students to practise the bunkai of the kata in a time efficient way. Having completed the drill on one side, the student would then do the drill on the other side before their partner takes their turn. This ...more

This clip was filmed at a two day seminar in Nuremburg, Germany. Over the weekend we covered the applications of both the Pinan / Heian series and Kushanku / Kanku-Dai. Particular emphasis was placed on the interaction between the two systems. The sequence shown in this clip is common to both. When we had looked at an individual sequence we added it into some drills we had been working on. ...more

This is a little bit of raw footage filmed while I was teaching in my dojo in April 2013. The acoustics of the hall are not great and I apologise for that. Hopefully you can all work out what is going on. We had been exploring various ways to trap the leg so that the opponent was unable to move it and hence regain their balance. A few of these methods come directly from the kata and could be ...more

This video shows three quick drills we did in the dojo in March 2013. Each drill was done for two minutes with the emphasis being on using the hips to ensure good impact and fast transitions. The combinations involve hitting with alternate hands, hitting with the same hand twice, rising, dropping, etc. While there are many different ways to generate power, I personally prefer “double ...more

This video was filmed at the dojo a few days ago while we were practicing both the common uppercut and “age-zuki”. While I feel it is important to learn both punches, the age-zuki does have some advantage when fighting with bare fists. One advantage is that impact is more likely to be made with the large knuckles as opposed to the joints of the fingers. It should be understood that ...more
