Bunkai Impact Training--Kata Ananku

Recently, I started a small karate club--Shorin Ryu Karate Academy--at my local YMCA, in western Pennsylvania. We focus on practical application of bunkai and kihon, and I'm working on developing various drills for partner training and solo practice. I really enjoy bag work, and I've been trying to develop ways to practice kata applications on the heavy bag. In this video, I'm drilling one application for the opening sequence of kata Ananku (as practiced in Matsubayashi Ryu).

I like it! That’s for sharing David!

Are you going to so more of these? What could be cool would be to see kata, bunkai, and bag drill. I always find descriptions of bunkai a little hard to follow so I’m not sure that I’m correctly visualising what you describe?

Love the concept though! Very cool to watch the kata on the bag as you show too. Kata should inform all parts of that we do and bag drills to match kata like this will no doubt be very useful to folks!

All the best,

Iain

That's a great idea! Right now, I have a few videos that are separate, focusing on bunkai, partner pad work, and solo heavy bag work. I agree--it would be helpful to put those elements together into a single video. I'll try that next. One problem, though, is that I'm a bit limited because I only have beginning students in my club right now; so, it's hard to work with them on more advanced kata material (e.g., in my system, Ananku is considered more advanced, coming after the pinans and the naihanchi katas). But, I can put something together for a beginning kata. Thanks for the idea!

I can see how that would be a problem, and bunkai demos are not strictly necessary. I’m delighted you’re going to do more of these! I think it’s a clever concept and I’m sure it will help people come up with their own similar bag drills. Thank you for sharing!

All the best,

Iain

Completely different kata from the Annanko practised by the Shito Ryu/Shukokai lineage that I practice but I love the bag drill and you certainly gave me some idea's.

Thanks!
