Video footage from Passai /Bassai Dai seminar

Hi all I recently taught a seminar on the kata Passai /Bassai Dai at the invitation of Brian Bentham (6th Dan) who is the owner of the Ryu Do Academy in Wigan. The session was very well attended, and the energy, enthusiasm and application was first class, making for a really enjoyable session. I began the session with a selection of pad drills which were not recorded, these drills were designed to inform the impact options we would be practicing during the seminar. My Bunkai Oyo for Passai was recorded, and I've decided to share the entire set of application practices with you. Although explanations were recorded video footage alone doesn't really get the essence across, or do the applications complete justice. I hope however that some of you may find my approach to Passai /Bassai Dai interesting. Regards Mark

Here we have our first couple of options for the Chudan Uke sequences of Passai /Bassai Dai

Thank you Mark, that is very much appreciated.

Always great to see some fresh ideas on how a kata can be read.

Those are good applications, and you get some important principles across.

All the best

Marc

Thanks Marc,  your comments are much appreciated.

Applications to kata should, when possible,  be a personal thing.

My reason for saying this is that the applications are supposed to be a real response to a real attack and not in a dojo. In that situation it has to work for the individual.  That's the reason I  always begin any seminar I teach by encouraging the attendees to tailor the applications once they've got the general idea of the application and its core principles.

One thing I did try to impress on the group was to actually put some pain on their partner, not in a gratuitous manner,  but to increase the intensity of the training.  I believe this to be very important if the karateka is to understand the effects the techniques actually have if they are to be trusted in combat. The group embraced this concept really well, which was great.

My applications are well received by some, not so much by others. That's the nature of these things. The seminar itself was very well received if the potential invites to teach at other dojos after the session was finished is anything to go by - I find that very humbling and quite energising.

One thing the videos don't get across is the energy once the group started training, which was excellent, the grunts & yowls of pain, plus the sound of bodies landing on the mats was great :-)

I'll begin sharing the rest of the recordings as promised

Regards

Mark

Mark, thank you for generously posting all those good ideas here. They're well presented and explained.

It's great to see a consistent approach to a kata's complete bunkai like this.

For other examples of complete bunkai on the forum see Katharii's series of videos on the bunkai of Enpi/Wanshu and another on the bunkai of Nijushiho/Niseishi.

Take care

Marc

Hi Marc. Thanks for your kind words regarding this series of videos. I think it's worth noting once again that a seminars worth of application practices is only scratching the surface, they merely introduce some ideas & food for thought for the people who attend Thanks again Regards, Mark

Totally OK to continue the thread. It’s all discussing Bassai / Passai and we always welcome people's views and alternatives. Thanks for sharing the videos. I like how you apply the end of the kata / body drop throw against the kick. Nicely done.

All the best,

Iain

Thanks Iain

I do like to throw, I use to train in wrestling, this changed my view on throwing in karate.

Wrestling approach have open so many posibilities within karate kata.

Kind regards

Les
