Tonfa Strikes

Hello, everyone!

I know that we don't do too much kobudo stuff, here, and I'm not really a kobudo guy, myself, but our Waza Wednesday video this week covers a few basic striking methods with the tonfa. It's a good start for those interested, if nothing else

Oh, I like it! That’s a well put together video and Richard whips those things around in a very impressive “really don’t want to be on the end of that” kind of way!

I have a beautiful pair of handmade oak tonfa that I was given as gift … and I can’t help feel the tonfa are as proportionally disappointed in their owner as I am impressed in their construction :-) They are truly beautiful, but I have no idea of how to use them.

I have a strong pragmatic proclivity, so the inability to use them as realistic self-protection tools (modern age, UK law, etc.) resulted in almost zero interest in learning tonfa, sai, etc. Although that is changing a little as I age and broaden my outlook slightly. I don’t think I’ll ever be prepared to devote much training time to Kobudo, but “basic application of the tool” videos like this one are great!

If nothing else, watching the weapon used well is inspiring and educational. The power and fluidity of Richard's movments is impressive!

Thanks for sharing!

All the best,

Iain

Thank you, Iain! Funnily enough, this is actually his "slow" speed :P. Like you, I don't have much inclination to work kobudo, as I don't generally carry around tonfa, sai, etc., but I have learned basic methods with them, which I can carry over into other things. I also acknowledge that it can be an interesting historical and cultural exploration, even if it's not my focus at the moment
