Ananko Bunkai Drill Part 1

Hi all

I hosted Iain in Presteigne,Wales recently and had the honour of sharing the mat with him sharing my take on the kata Ananko. This kata application drill deals with the opening sequences found in Ananko Kata (Ananku / Anannko) The main point of the drill is to move to an angle of advantage where further strikes can be delivered, using your partner as a reference offering barriers to overcome, and shots to deal with. It strips out the formality and standardisation of the kata to look at the basic foundation of moving to an angle of advantage, to build on that foundation before complexity of the sequence can be added.

Hope you enjoy them Part 2 soon!

Annanko has always been a favourite kata of mine and it was an interesting seminar; It might have been mother's day and a day when Wales were playing international rugby but I'm pretty sure that no one who attended regretted their choice.

Say where did you find the great cameraman? laugh

Excellent material and concepts! Curious to know which Ananku this is, as the Ananku in Matsubayashi starts off quite differently. Could someone link to a video of the kata? Looking forward to more in this series.

best,

David

It would be the Shito-Ryu version. Here is a video of it. As you say, it is markedly different from the Ananku of Matsubayashi Ryu.

All the best,

Iain
