Chest Block, Hammer Fist, Knee Strike Combo Drill

Hello,

Another application drill for chest block (chudan uke). Here, we are examining the windup and chest-block motion as striking the back of the neck, grabbing the chin/face, and pealing the head back to expose a target for the hammer fist (face, side of head, or throat). Various possible follow up techniques--here, we are practicing the hammer fist and knee strike. This drill is a bit more challenging for beginners, but my students eventually caught on and had fun training it. Hope you can use it or modify it for your own students.

Excellent stuff David. I've tried the Uchi uke/Soto uke strike combo in tonights class(After watching your last vid) with the back fist follow up with the hammer fist pad work which can be used to strike to the facial area. My classmates love it and I will try this next time. BTW, I like the kote fore-arm strike which enables you wrap the chin of your opponent with ease.....All the best..Gerald.

Another fine drill, David. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us.

This application reminds me of the uchi-ude-uke/gyaku-uchi-ude-uke/mawate gyaku-soto-ude-uke sequence at the beginning of Bassai Dai, as can be seen at 0:15 in this video:

Take care,

Marc

Yes, very similar! The Matsubayashi version of Bassai (the version I do) doesn’t have that sequence, but many other versions do. The application is very similar. Thanks for pointing that out!

Best,

David
