Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan Final Sequence Bunkai Drill

Hello,

The final sequence in Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan is the high block, low block, high block set of techniques. In this video, we explore two different ways of dealing with a lapel grab attack. The lapel grab is a common street attack. As much as possible, we should try to keep the enemy from grabbing our lapel. However, there are times and situations in which the enemy may successfully grab our lapel and then initiate an attack. This application from the kata provides at least two possible ways to deal with this common street attack.

Best,

David

Love it!

The principle used in the second application of moving the attacker's elbow across to mess up their posture is one that I find to be all over the place in kata. In the application you show you hook onto the elbow from above und pull it over to your hip as per the hikite. And the same principle can be applied by grabbing the elbow from below and pulling, or by moving your arm further over their elbow and using your elbow to "pull" it across, or by pushing the elbow across from the outside with your hand or with your lower arm/elbow. You could even just turn into their elbow from the outside and pushing it across with your upper arm/shoulder. There are many ways to bring the elbow across and countless options to follow up after breaking their balance this way. Controlling the enemy's elbow is almost as good as controlling their head.

David, thanks for all your awsome input and the work that you put into it. Thanks also to your students for agreeing to be in your Youtube videos. From what I've seen they had a lot of fun in your PE course and they picked it all up really well. That may be because they've had a good teacher.

Hope we will see more of your material in the future.

All the best,

Marc

Marc,

Thanks so much for the comments and affirmation! This really was a good group of students, and we had a blast in this class. This semester, I'm teaching through Pinan Nidan/Heian Shodan. I hope to get some videos up soon (been swamped this semester with research projects and other teaching). Stay tuned!

Best,

David
