Open/closed fist drill

This is a drill from the late Larry Williams Sensei We use it to get students used to swinging the hips more and using the pulling hand.

Great stuff! A belt is such a simple addition to the bag which can replicate pulling the limbs (free end) and the clothing / lapel (look around the bag) … and the great thing is almost every gi comes with a free one :-)

Using a belt in such a way is really clever, I definitely have to try that.

But have you considered using a resistance band instead of a belt? I think that way you could pull even more forcefully without displacing your target too much.

I do like having something to grab while striking, I get to practice guarding center, embalancing, managing recoil and sensitivity, balance, footwork for changing distance etc.. but mainly I don't miss as much! When I start stiking in close on a bag I always feel like I should be locating the arms for takedown defence and start pointing them away.

I've experimented with a lot of different bands and used them for a practicing with gi on a tree if I dont have a small enough tree to bend for kuzushi or Uchikomi practice (getting grips and embalancing) I just use cheep bungee cords mostly.  I don't like resistence bands as much on the bag because theres too much give and not an immediate resistence like a person resisting or recoiling from a strike but Ilike them for tons of other things.

I can see how both could be used depending in the drill. If you have footage, this maybe a good thread to introduce your use of the hooped cloth on the focus pad? The give and then snatch of that is a good analogue too.
