There is lots of good stuff online that may be downloaded legally. Recently I forgot where I found this book. I might as well post a link here lest I misplace it again.

The University of Hawaii has a pretty extensive collection of old karate books, in their original Japanese:

When I just tried the link, it was down, but I would try again later

There are hundreds of books, a few dozen works in PDF for download (all Japanese and one Chinese reprint, I think of "The Study of Seipai" by Mabuni Kenwa):

The university states regarding the terms of use:

The use of the digitized materials on this website is limited to individual research and study.

For instance there is an introductory compilation of Karate written by Shindo Jinen-Ryu founder Yasuhiro Konishi, which contains an comprehensive overview of the art of karate. My personal nugget in that book: An illustration of an indoor mobile makiwara, which can be rolled (it has rolls attached to it, similar to an office chair).
