Practical Tang Soo Do - Form, Interpretation, Application

Hey everyone,

This is a video from one of my classes where I am giving a brief explanation of my approach of forms practice. I lay out how we start with the movements, interpret them with a compliant partner, and apply them against a resisting partner. I use sequences from Naihanchi and Pyung Ahn Ee Dan as examples.

I've been at this application stuff for a few years now and something I've realized is that there is a tendency to conflate interpretation with application. What Iain call 'Kata-Based-Sparring' is, in my opinion, where real application comes in. It's important not to get stuck on the interpretation. Thanks!

I totally agree! Kata is best thought of as a process. Just like a car’s engine, the individual parts can only fulfil their purpose when they are all working together. Kata is great for the WHAT to do, but we need the live practise to also get the vital WHEN. Once again, great video!

All the best,

Iain
