Some of you have probably see something about the Knockout Game. It is an unprovoked attack against an unsuspecting victim, often from behind. A quick Google search will reveal lots of examples, but here is a link to an artical CNN did the other day. http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/22/justice/knockout-game-teen-assaults/
My question about this is what could the victims have done differently? In most cases that I’ve seen the victim is in a public place, usually alone, but there is a number of other people present. One example is the person who was hit as he used a busy crosswalk.
Does anyone practice awareness drills that would have been effective in this situation?

It doesn't seem any different from any other criminal behavior, the game is used as an excuse to hurt someone. The news keeps saying it's for "no reason" but It's like a mix between predatory violence and a status seeking show (SSS). Finding an excuse to commit violence against others is something criminals do not have a hard time doing.
"Chuck Williams blamed the media and parents.... "We market violence to our children and we wonder why they're violent. It's because we are.""
lol right becasue the criminals themselves couldn't possibly be responsible for their own behavior.
The basic defense is what it always is, pay attention to your surroundings. They prey on people who are not paying attention and do not look like they'll turn around and kick their ass (elderly, women, children etc).
I found this blogpost regarding this very issue. I found it a good read:
