Basic Takedown Drill for Shuto Uke, Nukite, Pivot in Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan

Hello,

This is a basic drill for the middle portion of Pinan Shodan/Heian Nidan. The drill is a bit artificial (indeed, all are, but some more than others...), but it works well for practicing the flinch response and strike to neck. I use the nukite at the end of the sequence as a palm heel strike to the chin/face to setup for a basic winding throw/takedown. The beginners did a fairly nice job working it--a bit awkward at first, but they caught on after a few times. The takedown works well, even with beginners. We also worked the drill with target pads.

Only real is real :-) Drills to isolate basic skill are an important part of the whole training matrix. It seems entirely appropriate for the shuto and the group; as is evidenced from the footage of the practise. Good stuff!

Thank you, Iain! I really am learning a lot by teaching and training this way, namely fitting drills and activities into the broader training matrix. That concept really has given me several "aha" lightbulb moments! I'm also receiving positive feedback from the students who had one sense of karate going into the class (sport karate or an outmoded, meaningless dance that can be fun but not terribly practical), but who are leaving with a whole other understanding. Hopefully, some of them will become involved in good clubs/schools after graduation (the students in this PE class are graduating seniors who need one more credit to fill out their schedules and earn enough credits to graduate).

I also use the turn in Heian Nidan as Funkoshi's 'kubi wa' but I use the nukite as a bicep bump. Nice work.

Thanks so much! I agree--I think the bicep bump works better for the winding throw, and the nukite as face strike is better for the basic step behind takedown. I decided not to confuse these beginners (already threw A TON of material at them this semester), but I think tactically, the bicep bump would work nicer to keep you in tight and wrap the enemy up before the throw.

The only bit that may be a bit artificial is the part where the attacker steps back after being struck in the neck and then tries another hook punch. But this way the drill achieves three things: 1) The students can walk through the kata sequence as is, i.e. three steps forward with shuto-uke, which is good for learning at this level. 2) It shows the two transitions from left to right and from right to left. 3) It implies that it might be necessary to continue your counter-attack until the attacker is down.

I use basically the same application. For the transitions I assume that my attacker throws two hooks so quickly that I have to intercept both with the flinching parts of two shuto-uke before the second one can land on the neck. So for example: Hook right - block with both arms ; immediate hook left - block with both arms, wrap around the attackers arm and strike the neck. You can see it in the video below from 1:25 min. First I show the solo sequence, second is shuto-uke as single techniques, third are the two transitions.

Same here. As an alternative we can use the whole arm to redirect the head. Both are in the video following the shuto-uke. And of course the bicep bump is also effective as shotokanman70 suggests.
