Good one, Peter. And easy to grasp, even for beginners.

To beginners I like to teach an application like that first, then do the kihon (same movement without the partner), then put it into a pattern by performing the moves to both sides (kata). This way they learn the first moves of Taikyoku-Shodan and early on get an idea of what kata is about (a mnemonic tool to remember methods of self-defence).
