First Half of Pinan / Heian Yodan Bunkai Drill (video)

This bit of raw dojo footage shows a bunkai drill for the first half of Pinan / Heian Yodan. The drill is not a “technique” to be used as is, but a drill that quickly allows students to practise the bunkai of the kata in a time efficient way. Having completed the drill on one side, the student would then do the drill on the other side before their partner takes their turn. This would continue for a set number of repetitions or until the allotted time has expired.

It should be obvious that this quick clip in no way shows the totality of training. This drill is not the totality of practise and the methodology of the kata should be placed into other drills and contexts, the underlying principles and the various ways they can manifest should be explored, and the methods and principles of the kata should also be practised in both semi-live and live drills. This drill is simply one way to permit time efficient practise of the core motions of the kata.

This clip is also not intended to be a substitute for direct instruction and hence not a great deal of detail in given when describing the individual techniques; because the students I was teaching already know all the individual techniques, and why they are performed as they are. Nevertheless, I hope you find the clip of some interest. I’ll be back with more soon!

All the best,

Iain
