Hanshi Patrick McCarthy course reports, pictures and videos

Hi,

I just thought I would submit a short report on my recent attendance at various seminars with Hanshi Patrick McCarthy.

In the middle of last month I ventured to the Netherlands for 6 day’s training at the EU gasshuku. The venue is a one million euro, purpose built dojo (heaven for martial artists – see the pictures linked below) and was attended by 65 Koryu Uchinadi students from the EU. The gasshuku started on an evening with a general introduction by each participant, then right into knife training. The following few days covered more knife, 06.30 am grappling sessions, a two person drill called kume mura kakiedamashi which contains templates from Suparenpei, Kururunfa, Seipai, Seisan, Chinto, Naihanchi and Neipai. We also went through gyaku-waza, which is a series of escapes, counters and reversals detailed in the Bubishi (standing and ground) combined into a two person training exercise. Sensei went through each of the kata on the Koryu Uchinadi curriculum using a group of students who were currently focussing on that form to go through the technical requirements, and then explaining the origins of each kata, its lineage and its ‘personality’. We did some bag work, ground and pound, went through the kata Happoren for a couple of hours and even a little shiatsu massage.

As well as the training the gasshuku is a social event, with aches discussed, bruises compared and jokes shared over a few beers at the end of the day.

On the 4th June Sensei McCarthy was in London teaching a Masterclass Seminar on the kata Sanchin at Sensei George Andrews’ dojo. The course was well attended and represented by Shotokan, Wado, Goju, Kyokushin and Shito schools as well as a Southern Crane instructor. The course started with a short lecture then went straight into training, covering applications for each move, and a closing talk about the health benefits found in the controlled regulation of breathing accompanied with the twisting and contraction of muscles. As some people were heading out of the door, and impromptu knife fighting input appeared out of no-where, and then we went for a lovely Chinese meal.

The following day I flew to Galway, Eire with Sensei and enjoyed four days training specifically for Koryu Uchinadi instructors and assistants, which covered the kakiedamashi exercise previously described, elements of the knife and tanbo (short stick) syllabus, impacting and receiving exercises, clinch work, a lecture on budo culture, kihon waza and an introduction to the sai, tonfa and nuchaku. Sensei also conducted a grading and you may be pleased to hear that a member of this forum, Eric Forsyth, was awarded a nidan in Koryu Uchinadi, as well as awarding the first shodan in Yamane Ryu Kobudo to Damien Costello.

Hopefully (!) this link will show Eric Forsyth and I running through one of the knife drills: http://www.facebook.com/ben.ryder2/posts/354621101271340?notif_t=like

Last weekend saw a two-day course on the kata Matsumura Passai, which was passed to Hanshi McCarthy from his teacher Master Kinjo Hiroshi. The course was attended by over 80 people, from Shoto-, Wado-, Shito-, Kyokushin, Goju- schools, as well as senior instructors from Dillman Kyusho, Kissaki-kai, Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do, Judo and Kapap (Krav Maga variant of Avi Nadia).
