Joint-Lock Escape and Counter (video)

This video was filmed at a seminar in Belgium where we explored karate locking, escapes from locks and counter-locking. It should be remembered that locking was once considered a fundamental part of karate.

Gichin Funakoshi (founder of Shotokan) wrote, “In karate, hitting, thrusting, and kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques and joints locks are included … all these techniques should be studied referring to basic kata.”

Kenwa Mabuni (founder of Shito-Ryu) expressed concern that karate was losing this side of the art in the 1930s: “The karate that has been introduced to Tokyo is actually just a part of the whole. The fact that those who have learnt karate there feel it only consists of kicks & punches, and that throws & locks are only to be found in judo or jujutsu, can only be put down to a lack of understanding … Those who are thinking of the future of karate should have an open mind and strive to study the complete art.”

As karateka who are thinking of the future of karate, and who are striving to study the complete art, locking should be a part of our everyday practise; as it was for the karateka of the past. I hope this clip give you some ideas for training and thanks for taking the time to watch it.

All the best,

Iain
