Photos from the Animal List gathering in Colorado, USA

Last weekend Helen and I spent a few days in Colorado, USA at Marc and Dianna MacYoung’s annual Animal List BBQ. It was blast! Great company, great martial arts, great food, and good times! It was an unforgettable trip.

If you follow the link below interested people can see some photographs from the event:

It was great to meet up with Marc MacYoung, Dianna MacYoung, Kris Wilder, Rory Miller, Sam Walker, Lee Gray, Clint Overland, and many others.

I also filmed almost all of my session and I’ll share that on this website as soon as I’ve edited into something presentable.

I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures!

All the best,

Iain

PS Don’t forget that Marc will be teaching in the UK later in the year! Not to be missed! Details here: http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/news/marc-macyoung-teaching-uk-september

PPS I had great fun shooing in the USA. In the comments to the associated pictures a few people had started a discussion on the pros and cons of private gun ownership and USA / UK gun laws. I deleted those comments. While I am personally keen to learn more about firearms that is not to be taken as comment for or against private gun ownership. I’d appreciate it if people could refrain from discussing such a controversial political issue here. Thanks!

I don't think I'd like to kick sand on that BBQ...

So what is this animal list thing then?

In line with forum rules ..

  1. what did you teach?  saw bits of Heian ..
  2. learn anything interesting?
  3. did your audience find anything particularly interesting about any of the bunkai?  surprised? impressed?

It’s an email list ran by US self-protection expert Marc “Animal” MacYoung and his wife Dianna. Members of the list meet up each year at Marc’s house in the third week of July. This was the 10th BBQ (1st one I’ve been to).

I covered general kata principles using the Pinans / Heians and a little from Kanku-Dai / Kushanku. I videoed most of it and will share in due course.

Loads! You could not move without bumping into an expert. Way too much to write out :-)

The feedback was very positive and people seemed to enjoy it. Afterward it was the stuff on assuming angles that people wanted to talk more about so I guess that was the key takeaway for most. The fact there was lots of trapping / limb-control in what I taught was also commented on by a few people.

As I say, I’ll have footage available soon so people can have a watch and see for themselves what we covered.

All the best,

Iain

Iain's class was a big hit. And Iain himself was a big hit too.

Here is the first bit of footage from the event. It’s on stances and I have couple more on angles and “two-hands” that I’ll post on the site over the next week or two. I also intend to make the full thing available in due course.

All the best,

Iain
