Practical Applications of the Shotokan Kata Jion and Jiin by Carsten Schmitt

NEW BOOK: “Practical Applications of the Shotokan Kata Jion and Jiin” by Carsten Schmitt:

“Kata is the way of the old Karate masters to pass their knowledge about self protection to their students. This book contains an analysis of the Shotokan Karate style's kata Jion and Jiin and their practical applications. It elaborates on why the two kata have a relation from a practical point of view and gives guidance how to train the methods described in them. The book was created for the author's 4th Dan grading in November 2012 with Iain Abernethy, Chief Instructor of the World Combat Association and leading expert in practical applications of Karate.”

Carsten Schmitt has been practising Karate since more than 25 years and is holding a 3rd Dan in Shotokan Karate and a 4th Dan from the World Combat Association. After years of practise in Sports Karate as a competitor, coach and also in the organisation of tournaments he started investigating and practising the practical part of Karate.

I graded Carsten to 4th dan under the WCA (world combat association). It was a tough test and Carsten showed a strong understanding and ability throughout. Part of the test was the production of a book on the applications of the Shotokan Kata Jion and Jiin. The books was so good that I encouraged Carsten to make it available to all as I feel it makes an important contribution to the collective knowledge pool. All practitioners of Jion and Jiin (regardless of style) will want to familiarise themselves with Carsten’s views on these kata.” – Iain Abernethy
