On Saturday the 13th of April I will be teaching at Canton Martial Arts in Eastbourne! The seminar will start by looking at bunkai for the core movements we find in many kata. This will include a look at stances, hand positions and the frequently misunderstood “blocks”. We will use the Taikyoku kata of the host group as the vehicle for this, but prior knowledge of the kata is not necessary.
We will then look at the Fuyu Kata Ichi (also written as Fukugata-Ichi). This kata was created by Shōshin Nagamine and was meant to a summary of the basics of Shuri-te karate. Chōjun Miyagi created its sister kata, Fukugata Ni (later subsumed into Goju-Ryu under the name of “Gekisai Dai Ichi”) to be a summary of the basics of Naha-Te. It was hoped that the two kata would be practised by all styles and provide a common foundation, but that did not come to pass. The Fuyu kata remain very interesting, practically and historically, and I’m sure you will enjoy this exploration. Again, no prior knowledge of the kata is necessary.
The cost is just £30. Please contact Richard Canton for details of how to secure your place.
