The theme of the first day will be “Meikyo and Wankan: The Tomari-Te Influence on Shotokan”. We will explore bunkai for both Meikyo and Wankan. These kata are both said to originate in the Tomari region of Okinawa; however, the Shotokan kata are quite different from the other versions of Rohai (Meikyo) and Matsukaze (Wankan). In addition to exploring bunkai for the Shotokan versions, we will also compare and contrast with other versions and theorise as to how they may have a developed from a common source.  This will be an interesting exploration of the Tomari-Te influence on Shotokan and the combative methods that derived from that source.
