Practise hours:

Saturday 18th May 10.00 - 17.00 (including lunch break)
Sunday 19th May: 9.00 - 12.00

Saturday: Vamia, Ruutikellarintie 2

Sunday: Teeriniemen väestönsuoja, Budosali, Joutsenenkatu 9

Theme: At this seminar, Iain will be covering practical bunkai and drills for Kanku-Dai / Kushanku. We will cover how all these methods can be applied in modern-day self-defence and the associated training drills. The kata is a record of the combative techniques and concepts formulated by a Chinese martial artist who went by the name of Kushanku. Kushanku can also be pronounced “Kosokun”, and the kata was renamed as “Kanku-Dai” in Shotokan karate. Kushanku is said to have come from China to Okinawa in the 1750s with other military personal at the request of Okinawa’s king. While in Okinawa, Kushanku taught Tode Sakugawa, who in turn created the kata to record Kushanku’s methodology.

On day two we will look at the throwing methods of Gichin Funakoshi! “In karate, hitting, thrusting, and kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques and pressure against joints are included.” - Gichin Funakoshi, Karate-Do Kyohan, 1935. We will explore the throws that Funakoshi showed in his writings, and compare them with the throws of the kata and other karate masters.
