Introduction to Makiwara Training

Although we tend to be very modern-minded here on Iain's forum, I thought I would be a bit of an advocate for the most iconic training implement of karate--the makiwara.

I'm a fan of the makiwara too although I accept its limitations. I have a slightly more modern variation, the board is mounted to an old car tyre on the wall, the tyre providing the spring. The benefit of this however is that additional strikes/blocks can be delivered to the rim of the tyre in addition to the strike to the board.

I also accept its limitations, as I accept the limitations of any training tool--it has a specific purpose, and outside of that specific purpose, you will need other tools. I have also seen a variety of tire makiwara, and I think they can be very useful, although they do feel slightly different.
