Kamae Bunkai - Static Postures or Active Techniques

Hello, everyone!

I just published this article after putting together my thoughts on "kamae," after seeing several comments on them being static "guard" or "ready" postures.

Good article! My favourite quote on this is Genwa Nakasone’s when he was clarifying Funakoshi’s 17th precept (“Stances are for beginners. Advanced students use natural postures”) in Karate-Do Taikan (1938):

“Karate has many stances; it also has none.”

Love it! When people first learn then they work with moving in and out of set postures (stances) and as they advance they will naturally flow through those postures (no more “stances”). We have stances, but also no stances :-)

My article on this topic can be found here: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/article/my-stance-stances

Thanks for sharing Noah!

All the best,
