Video of Pre-emptive Strike

Though, I dont necessarily agree with the karate instructor not leaving the scene, and allowing for a confrontation to happen, this seems to be a good (or at least very effective) example of what a pre-emptive strike can be.  The video player I have is blurry, but looks like a shuto-uke or forearm strike similar to opening of tekki-nihanchi

That’s what it looks like to me. It’s what Peter Consterdine called the “Back Slap” and the targeting is also the same as Peter endorses. It’s a highly potent technique and I’ve seen many examples of it being used to stop potentially violent behaviour in its tracks.

All the best,

Iain

Iain do you and Peter endorse the side of the neck as targets? From what I see in this video it is the brachial plexus being struck?

Personally I don’t get too specific with targets due to the fact that people move a lot. The brachial plexus would be the ideal, but I tend to teach in terms of “zones”. In this case it would be “bring the arm into the “L” of the neck” as that will generally result in the forearm covering the right area. Hit hard and precision is less critical though.

I did a full podcast on this a while ago: http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/pressure-points-podcast

All the best,

Iain

PS By compete coincidence I’m editing together a video on this strike’s role in multiple enemy scenarios for the World Combat Association member’s zone at this moment :-)
