Heian Nidan / Pinan Shodan Kata Applications

Hi everybody,

recently after training I had a chance to record applications for Heian Nidan / Pinan Shodan.

As I (currently) see it, Pinan Shodan / Heian Nidan as the first of the five Pinan/Heian katas provides solutions for dealing with round attacks like a big hook, straight attacks like an attempt to push or grab, and kicks like a clumsy football kick. At this stage we have not yet been grabbed. The applications are designed to go with the natural flinch response and to quickly facilitate escape.

The video is intended as a memory aid for myself and my students. But it might be useful for others as well. Have a look!

Take care,

Marc

Thanks for sharing. I like it. I really like how you demonstrate several applications for every move. That clearly expresses the fact that kata show us one representative example of its applications and that we should not limit ourselves to to just that one. Great stuff!

Yes, as with all of the bunkai videos all the good folks on this forum are sharing, there is so much depth and details to each of the moves and applications. The katas are packed with information rich examples of concepts. Each move exemplifies many of these concepts. And yet the applications should still be simple enough to work under adrenaline.

That's why Itosu wrote: "Practice each of the techniques of karate repeatedly. Learn the explanations of every technique well, and decide when and in what manner to apply them when needed."
