That seems fair enough to me. We introduce sparring earlier on in Shidokan and keep the rounds the same time length but both seem to get to the same level by blackbelt.

Back when I was doing taekwondo we would fight every training session. Every grading I attended included a fighting section, which usually lasted for half an hour at least. Not sure how individual fights were timed, it was a case of pair up and get on with it, then swap partners after time was called. It pretty full on too, and the only protection we had were shin and instep pads.

After fighting we were treated to a tortuous "stamina test" which involved a lot of shouting from the seniors and the rest of us doing all manner of exercises that you would gasp in horror at today.

It kind of depends on the type and quality of the fights and what you are trying to test....?

I personally would prefer less fights but of higher intensity, diversity and quality... in other words dojo kumite (kata-based sparring) etc rather than point sparring (or full contact kick-boxing stylee). If you have too many fights then it can just becomes a rather formulaic stamina test, usually driven by a very constrained set of "competion rules"...

The fights in a grading should aim to demonstrate the students capability..the student is being pressure tested, so what are you tesing.... is it stamina, psychology, athletic prowess, fighting spirit and/or ability to handle certain fighting senario's such 1 against many, or pre-fight confrontration, or ground work or stand-up etc etc..

Cheers

The gradings in my Sensei Kyokushin Dojo is similar from black tiger..........But, my sensei ask the adult students to do the Kata requirements, in addition of doing kata, he'll ask the students to do 3-4 technique Bunkai from a grab, striking, grappling situation based on the Kata of his choice.

Cheers.

If you feel that's best for your dojo then stick with it in my opinion.  In my system (Kyokushin) testing tends to be heavily focused on jissen kumite (knockdown kumite).  My current organization breaks it down as such (from 7th kyu to 1st dan):

7TH KYU: Be able to practice kumite without causing hard feelings and show control.

6TH KYU: 10 minutes of continuous kumite with 2+ opponents (they switch out opponents every few minutes so you get a fresh opponent but you continue to fatigue).  Know 10 ippon kumite combinations.

5TH KYU: 15 minutes of continuous kumite.  Know 20 sanbon kumite combinations.

4TH KYU: 20 minutes of continuous kumite.  Be able to display individual fighting combinations at will.

3RD KYU to 1ST KYU: Minimum of 30 minutes of continous kumite.  Know 25 sanbon kumite combinations.

SHODAN: Minimum of 30 minutes of continous kumite.

I know one of my senpai had to do 50 minutes of continous kumite to achieve his nidan as well but I think they cap it at no more than 60 minutes.

For your interest. my Kickboxing syllabus calls for the following. Note that White Belt = 8th Kyu.

* For each grade, that many minutes continuous sparring. IE one minute for 7th Kyu, 2 minutes for 6th Kyu and so on. Students will change partners every minute. Everyone will spar to begin with and we'll slowly lose students as we progress through the grades.

* For each grade up to Shodan, that many rounds of two minutes of Kickboxing. Totals 10 rounds of two minutes. Each round they get a new opponent. The whole class will be involved as timekeepers, judges (to assess them on judging), referees (to assess them refereeing) and so on. The landmark grades are 4th Kyu (4 x 2 minutes) and 2nd Kyu (6 x 2 minutes) in which the rounds must be consecutive. Otherwise they aren't necessariy consecutive

*  From 3rd Kyu they also have to do points fighting in incrementing numbers of rounds

* For 1st Kyu they have one round of fighting two opponents.

* For Shodan Ho, they have to compete in representation of the club. They don't necessarily have to win, but of course they must perform appropriate to their grade. In the club they also have two rounds of fighting two opponents in Kickboxing and one round of Kickboxing against a grappler.

* For Shodan they Kickbox for one round against three opponents

* For 1st Dan there is no set requirement but they must be prepared for any (and all) of the above on the grading day. They will also spar with weapons

* For 2nd Dan we do a Combat Jujitsu match

This is possibly a but different to other groups but reflects our Kickboxing as being a secondary Martial Art in our club.

Black Tiger - I'd maybe start them sparring at maybe 6th kyu and instead of shadow sparring maybe have them do those times on a set of pads demonstrating some combinations.
